"Toward the end of my final-round interview at HBS, my interviewer said, "You have done and accomplished many things. What drives you? Why do you do what you do?" [...] I wanted to reach into my soul for a real answer, something closer to a universal theory of my own brief existence. I had thought about the real answer before, but thought it sounded too "fluffy." I was afraid being earnest might cost me. Then I thought: If giving her an honest answer would mean not getting into HBS, then maybe HBS wasn't the place for me. It became a test of the institution, as much as a test of myself. So I said, "Love. Love is what drives me." She looked slightly surprised, so I explained: From a very young age, being fiercely independent-minded and fascinated with everything from science to metaphysics, I embraced the notion that I am given one life to live, a finite amount of time on earth. Regardless of my external environment (or what other people said), I believed I had choices-choices over how I spend my time, choices over where I dedicate my life and my work. Over time, and across my journeys around the world, I found that I dedicated my life and my time to those people, activities, and institutions that I LOVE. I had little time for anything else"
